Street Angels

Curated by Guy Smallman & Azim Fakri. Photos by Zahra, Mateen, Ahad, Bahran & Najibullah.

Photojournalist Guy Smallman and Kabul based artist Azim Fakri taught the basics of photography to five Afghan street children. They then issued them with disposable 35mm film cameras. The result is an exhibition giving a stunning insight into life on the margins of society in a wild and war torn country.

Light. People. Dark. Places

When darkness dominates an image the everyday becomes intimate, the familiar haunting. These images taken in available light - often a fire, candle or single light bulb - are from India and Morocco. But can the same lighting conditions be found in the East End of London?

Spitalfields Nippers

Harace Warner

The Gentle Author of Spitalfields Life, the East End Culture blog, introduces Horace Warner's Spitalfields Nippers, showing the photographs and giving the background to this astonishing set of images. Around 1900, photographer Horace Warner took a series of portraits of some of the poorest people in the East End - creating relaxed, intimate images that gave dignity to his subjects and producing great photography that is without parallel in his era. This unique collection of pictures revolutionises our view of Londoners at the end of the nineteenth century, by bringing us startlingly close and permitting us to look them in the eye. Discovered recently and only seen by members of Warner’s family for more than a century, almost all of these breathtaking photographs are now published for the first time by Spitalfields Life Books.

Modern Magic Lantern Show

with Steve Lewis

Working in collaboration with East End culture blog Spitalfields Life, we return to the glory days of Magic Lantern Shows that were such a popular feature of the Institute in its early years. Photographer Steve Lewis shares his favourite images and stories in conversation with Stefan Dickers, Bishopsgate Institute’s Library and Archives Manager. Steve Lewis’ early days as a press photographer were spent in the East End of London; during this time the photographs he took captured the gritty reality of life in east London during the ‘Swinging’ Sixties. These Photographs appear in his first book London’s East End - A 1960s Album published in 2010. The images graphically illustrate widespread poverty, poor housing, industrial unrest and racial tension. Steve’s second book London’s East End - Then & Now was published in 2012 and his latest book An East End Album was published earlier this year and includes his favourite photographs in a hard back publication.

Modern Magic Lantern Show

Bob Mazzer

Working in collaboration with East End culture blog Spitalfields Life, we return to the glory days of Magic Lantern Shows that were such a popular feature of the Institute in its early years. Photographer Bob Mazzer shares his favourite images and stories in conversation with Stefan Dickers, Bishopsgate Institute’s Library and Archives Manager.

Bob Mazzer began capturing life on the London Underground in the 1980s while commuting to work and back on the tube. The images he took are a fascinating social documentary revealing the changing fashions and times with humour and humanity.

“Every day I travelled to King’s Cross and back. Coming home late at night, it was like a party and I felt like the tube was mine and I was there to take the pictures.” – Bob Mazzer

Postcards from Babylon - a rough guide to liberation

Christian de Sousa

Postcards from Babylon is an exploration of cities, subculture and the state of the world. It is a portrait of our civilisation and the ways we seek change, understanding and more soulful ways of being.

The project originated as a ground-breaking book of photography and writing by Christian de Sousa, subsequently growing into an interactive collaboration across analogue and digital platforms.

Blackall Studios will show work from the book, inviting visitors to write their own postcards and participate in an evolving conversation around the themes of PfB, with screenings, talks, workshops, discussions, performances, DJs, and a pop-up café...

The Isle of Dogs: Photographs from the 1980s and Now

Mike Seaborne

In the early 1980s I undertook an extensive photographic project to document the Isle of Dogs before it was comprehensively redeveloped. 30 years later, I am again photographing the Island to illustrate just how much things have changed. Where possible, I am taking photos from exactly the same locations as in the 1980s in order to make direct comparisons.

Traces Remain, and Age or Beauty III

Geoff Chaplin

"Traces Remain ... but what counts as survival?" is a largely pinhole photography series presented as colour, cyanotype and gum prints. Photographs were taken in Japan, UK and Jordan. This conceptual series questions our legacy and place in the universe. The title is partly taken from the book by Charles Nicholl.

"Age or Beauty III - modern art painted by Nature" comprises new photographs of rusting steel panels in Hokkaido, Japan, and is presented as colour prints and temperaprints. The series references work by Gerhard Richter and John Cage.

The Deserted Village

Alex Pielak, Tilley Harris

The Deserted Village presents the stories and experiences of the last community to live and work in Clapton’s Old Tram Depot before they were evicted. This collection of photos, audio and archive material serves as a marker for the community's place in local history. The exhibition examines issues around regeneration. It asks how the changing makeup of our towns and cities reflects local history, as micro-communities form, develop and then disperse.

Chris Barrett and researcher/writer Gianluca Spezza

Images and text that offer a different approach to documenting North Korea.

Icons of Rhetoric offers a unique, introspective look at North Korea, crafted using North Korean news footage, a smartphone, Impossible instant film and North Korean testimonies.

The project investigates the visual representation of North Korea and the contextualisation of media images; exploring the visual lexicon which permeates the often cited 'most isolated country in the world': North Korea.

The exhibition will see the launch of a zine containing images and text from the work in partnership with thephotocopyclub.com

'I was watching in the square as the cops lost it early on. Just before this shot I’d been trying to shelter with three cops behind a pole. They were more scared than I was and the pole wasn’t entirely adequate as protection'

'I was part of a young generation of ‘struggle photographers’ committed to documenting the political mobilization of the time... I witnessed violent repression by the State and multiple funerals of young township activists. These images are partisan, framed against the background of the immense suffering of black people under apartheid'

The East End Archive created by staff at The Cass Faculty of Arts, Architecture and Design is a developing collection of historical and contemporary photographs. The decision to acquire digital files rather than objects allows the Archive to grow and expand without facing major storage issues and is available online globally. The diversity and extended perception of the collection means that the East End is open to interpretation and the visual representation lends inspiration for the imagination. The very axis of its success is the combining of past with present and the future. The East End Archive can be viewed at www.eastendarchive.org

Helmand Return

Robert Wilson

Gallery One and a Half presents Helmand Return, an exhibition of new work by Robert Wilson.

In 2014 Wilson revisited Afghanistan as an official war artist to record the British troops' final tour of duty. These apolitical photographs allow a rare glimpse at the packing up and disposal of equipment, documenting the human and logistical challenges faced at the end of war.

100 years on from World War One, these images provide a fresh perspective on the traditions of conflict photography.

Wilson’s work has been shown widely, including at London’s Southbank Centre and the National War Museum, Edinburgh.

Johnnie Walker on the beach

Francisco Paco Carrascosa

“As a ‘paparazzo of everyday life’, I have distilled my view of the world into a photographic essay in book form, consisting of 2640 pictures. The resulting five volumes are my homage to life, photography and the commonplace.” Francisco Paco Carrascosa

Inspired by the figure of Johnnie Walker from Haruki Murakami’s novel “Kafka on the Shore” – a Pop Art figure and a symbol for “being on the move” – I let my curiosity be my guide and roamed the world like a Baudelairean flâneur of the 21st century, travelling to Spain, Japan, Italy and Switzerland.

The Great Londoners

Nicholas Goodden

Nicholas Goodden is a french London-based urban/street photographer, Olympus ambassador and founder of the ‘Street Photography London’ collective. His photography has been featured in The Huffington Post, Londonist, LondonOnTheInside and The Phoblographer to name a few. This large body of work entitled ‘The Great Londoners’ was extremely challenging. Very close and moving ‘targets’ shot from the hip, in manual focus at wide aperture with razor thin depth of field. None of the Londoners photographed are posing or even aware of Goodden and his camera, yet the photos emanate a certain cinematic quality.

Light. People. Dark. Places

Anne Heslop

When darkness dominates an image the everyday becomes intimate, the familiar haunting. These images taken in available light - often a fire, candle or single light bulb - are from India and Morocco. But can the same lighting conditions be found in the East End of London?

My Journey: Stories of London Migrants

They make up 40% of the population of London, and everyone seems to be talking about them. But what do the capital’s migrants say about themselves? My Journey showcases the work of London migrants from all over the world, who use photography, film, audio and comic strips to tell their personal stories. My Journey is run by Migrants Resource Centre and funded by City Bridge Trust.

A photobook concerning the choice of the last portrait. A reflection on the identity of women, on memory and on the essence of how women are perceived by others, on how they would like to be. On which sign we would leave.

Circus, Showmen & Freaks

David Pickens

Roll up!... Roll up!
Step this way!
The thrills and spills of the Circus, the Showmen and the downright Freaky... All in photographic form.
David trained formally in photography... then in 1990 ran away with the circus, performing Slack-Rope walking shows around the globe! Now back behind the camera, his portraits are of amazingly talented performers from his life on the road, whom he now calls his 'global family'.

Signs and Misdemeanours

CITIZEN SKWITH

The East End has never been a 'don't do that' sort of place, it always maintains a sense of humour, even through the hard times, so my signs and messages reflect that. Also I'll be transforming traffic cones into 'triffic' cones dressed up like famous Eastenders.

The image is my Ronnie Kray ‘Triffic Cone’.

Post photos of my work to Citizen Skwith on Facebook and check out citizenskwith.co.uk for more info about what I am up to for Photomonth.

Theatre Royal Stratford East Archive

Archivist: Murray Melvin

In 1991, a year after the death of Avis Bunnage, known as The Queen of the Workshop, the theatre was given an old brown cardboard suitcase full of programmes and photographs and other memorabilia that Avis had collected over the years of her work at the theatre. The then Artistic Director Philip Hedley invited Murray Melvin to spend a couple of weeks sorting it all out. Twenty three years later Murray is still collecting and the archive has expanded to a complete collection of material from all productions after the Theatre Workshop period to the present day, and has compiled a comprehensive list of all the dates and titles of productions that have played at the theatre since the very first one in December 1884.
