04 Nov - Tuesday 4 Nov 7.30pm Spitalfields Nippers Harace Warner The Gentle Author of Spitalfields Life, the East End Culture blog, introduces Horace Warner's Spitalfields Nippers, showing the photographs and giving the background to this astonishing set of images. Around 1900, photographer Horace Warner took a series of portraits of some of the poorest people in the East End - creating relaxed, intimate images that gave dignity to his subjects and producing great photography that is without parallel in his era. This unique collection of pictures revolutionises our view of Londoners at the end of the nineteenth century, by bringing us startlingly close and permitting us to look them in the eye. Discovered recently and only seen by members of Warner’s family for more than a century, almost all of these breathtaking photographs are now published for the first time by Spitalfields Life Books. EXTRA DATE ADDED DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND Friday 5 December 7.30pm. Free. Booking essential bishopsgate.org.uk 020 7392 9200 |

01 Oct - 01 Oct Theatre Royal Stratford East Archive Archivist: Murray Melvin In 1991, a year after the death of Avis Bunnage, known as The Queen of the Workshop, the theatre was given an old brown cardboard suitcase full of programmes and photographs and other memorabilia that Avis had collected over the years of her work at the theatre. The then Artistic Director Philip Hedley invited Murray Melvin to spend a couple of weeks sorting it all out. Twenty three years later Murray is still collecting and the archive has expanded to a complete collection of material from all productions after the Theatre Workshop period to the present day, and has compiled a comprehensive list of all the dates and titles of productions that have played at the theatre since the very first one in December 1884.
